About the Author
Born in England in 1969, Ashley Bassie is an independent art historian, specialised in German Art. After graduating from the University of Manchester, the author conducted her research across Europe. She published several works creating a link between art and politics and centres her research on the first quarter of the twentieth century.

get the good edition

There are at least 3 editions of this book. Try to get the edition ISBN #1844847152 or #1840138963, pub by Sirrocco. They are unedited, about 280 pages instead of just 200 pages on edition ISBN #1844844579, pub by Parkstone. The larger editions are nice books. Amazon sometimes attaches one review, like this one, to similar titles without regard to edition, so you have to look.

An Important Missing Link

This is about the twentieth book we own in the Taschen Art series. In fact, were it not for the reasonableness of the prices of his books, preprints and plates, I have no doubts that we would not own nearly as many art books and reprints as we do. And like the others in this series, even for a Christmas present, this one provides a lot of bang for the buck.
As far as artistic schools go, our favorites are: first the modern abstractionists, and then everything else in between as we try to work our way backwards to the Impressionists which are among our least favorite. Thus this book fills in an important gap in our artistic knowledge and in completing the intellectual and aesthetic backward journey. In a real sense, it is the Expressionists that are the most prominent "missing link" between the two genres: a true "weigh station" between Impressionism and Abstractionism, with such famous Abstractionisms as Wassily Kandinsky, among others having spend a brief time at the expressionist stage of their development. It is also a "missing link" in other ways as well, aesthetically for instance. One struggles intellectually to grasp the full meaning of the works of most abstractionists, and perhaps much less so for the impressionists. And predictably, in terms of intellectual difficulty, the works of these expressionists fits somewhere in between. Despite this, they all are as rich in meaning and in color as well as in structure and in all the other dimensions of artistic value as are those that are more difficult to understand.
But more than all this, these prints, and the history and explanations that accompany them, stand quite strongly on their own and are full of surprises for those who, like us, are unfamiliar with this genre of painters. The reader is likely to find the works of not just the familiar artists such as Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse, and the aforementioned Wassily Kandinsky, refreshing but also those of Erich Heckel, August Macke, and Ernest Kirchner, an important part of the missing link on the backtracking to the Impressionists.
I admit that I buy these more for the ability to download them onto my iPod, so that I can review them no matter where I am, than for the reading of the accompanying texts. However, this book was an exception. Not knowing much about the Expressionists, I found every word of the text well written, and interesting. Three stars.

good introduction to expressionism

I bought this book to have an idea about this painting school in case I have the opportunity to visit the famous neue pinacotheque in Munich or other museums. But there're so many museums to see in the Bayern areas but the book gives a very good overview about this school of painting (Munch...). Worth reading.
