About the Author

Joyce Slochower is Professor Emerita at Hunter College and Graduate Center, the City University of New York. She is on the Faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral Program, the Steven Mitchell Center, the National Training Program of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, the Philadelphia Center for Relational Studies, and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California in San Francisco. She is the author of Holding and Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2014) and over sixty papers. She is in private practice in New York City.

Serves best as a review guide

I teach this class as a high school alternative to AP and the CIE website recommends this course book as a textbook. I can say without a doubt, this is not a textbook replacement. The book does a great job of hitting all the topics that are covered in the AICE syllabus but it simply cannot stand alone as a textbook. My main issue with this book is that it tends to gloss over the topics and doesn't go in too much depth. Students need more practice and examples than this book tends to give. As an educator, I can definitely recommend this book as a review before the exam or as a supplemental book. As a supplement, this book is great, as a replacement for a textbook, I don't recommend it. The CD that comes with this book provides great animations and supplemental problems students can work on. Do not expect a ton of work for students, but the few problems provided do a decent job as examples and review problems. If you are a student looking for a review book, I can recommend this book, but be forewarned that it is a lengthy book and does include both AS material and A material. If you are a teacher, plan to use this as an additional resource to teach the class and not as a replacement for a good textbook.

Mediocre at best

I had to use this textbook for my high school AS-level chemistry course, and while the textbook does provide a format that allows students to pass the exam, it lacks the depth for chemistry and the syllabus. The organic chapters are decent, but I believe more examples need to be provided for harder examples, especially with amines and cyanides. The book puts equations on the page,but does not really explain them and their significance. For example, the exam may ask for a reaction that was in the book, but you, as the student do not understand the significance. So it almost like you are craming in all of these equations, but are grasping the concepts behind them. I would suggest buying a new book coming out, by Hodder Education, probably in the fall of this year, or purchase the new edition of this textbook, which I believe comes out this summer. Definitely need a good teacher for this course, cannot self-study.

This book is designed for A levels, equivalent to AP Chemistry, but should be useful for students taking introductory Chemistry. The concepts are carefully explained and the exercises are very helpful to build confidence and understanding of the subject. Solutions are provided on the CD. Compared to a standard AP Chemistry or college Chemistry textbook, this book is a lot cheaper and does a better job teaching the basic ideas. It achieves this by doing away with the details that few college freshmen will ever learn or remember.

Review of an Excellent TEXTBOOK

Too bad the other reviewers reviewed the buying experience instead of the attributes of the textbook.

What follows is my review of the TEXTBOOK:

I am a math tutor and have been searching for a good source of supplemental practice problems for my Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus students. One of my recent students was studying this subject matter in college and was using this text. I liked his book so much that I bought two used copies to use with my high school students. I'm very glad that I did so.

One of the most notable positive qualities of the book is that the text is laid out with plenty of blank space, so it is easy to stay focused on the problem being discussed. The problem sets are laid out in an organized fashion, and the directions are very clear.

The author of this book has done a great job of providing an exceptional number and variety of problems in each section. The text itself offers many clear and well thought out examples. As such, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a supplemental source of model problems and practice material. Since this is an older edition of the text, there are several low cost copies available through Amazon sellers. In my experience, the purchase of this book has been a very worthy one.

IR book?

I had to keep looking at the cover to make sure it was an IR book. The heroine was described as having blue eyes, red hair. It's never mentioned in the book that she's black, but the cover certainly looks like it.

Not Enought Depth To The Characters!

This book was just okay. I didn't feel like we got a real good feel for who the heroine (Diana) and the hero (Clay) were as individuals. We know that Diana losses her job and now has to struggle to get another before she losses her apartment, but I don't think we really get to know her or what in life has made her who she is. Clay is a billionaire by the description of his mansion and all the money that he spends on Diana to make her comfortable, but we really don't get to feel all the dimensions of Clay himself.

We know that Diana and Clay fall for one another, but I didn't really feel the chemistry between the two. For a person who is a sucker for a surrogate romances I feel let down because I never read the words "I love you." The hero only states that "they should go about this life together,' since they are having a baby together.

As I said the book was okay, but I wanted a little more dimension in my characters, especially for such a subject as surrogacy.

The book lacked so much. After finishing this, I felt like I still didnt know the characters. In all honesty the description of this book, pretty much tells all. There wasnt any connection with Diana or Clay. Other than the fact you know she lost her job. This book could've been really good; had the Author went a little deeper in the characters. Told us more about Clay, then possible allowing Clay and Diana to struggle with falling for each other. Right now Im trying to decide do she love Clay for Clay or does she loves Clay for what he can give her... hmmmm something to think about.. Good Luck!
