A Masterful Theater Experience

I first saw "Art" performed in London in April of 1997, and it had a profound effect upon me. I did not have the privilege of seeing it with Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stout, but I did see it with three excellent actors. Since then I have seen in it in various other venues. It is almost actor-proof and doesn't require stars.
It is a play that does not read particularly well; it is very talky, and it needs the interpretive actors to carry it along. At times reading it you feel as if this is theater of the absurd, but when you see it performed it isn't; it is realistic, but satiric.
It's a play told in very a human and particularized way about friendship, egos, loyalty, communication, esthetics and human nature. Serge buys a more than bland painting; his friend Marc says he hates the painting (partly because he wasn't consulted about the purchase). Marc is unhappy because his friend has turned on him so he seeks the backing of Yvan, a peacemaker and compromiser who says he is moved by the painting, sees or feels resonance in the art, hoping to take a middle ground between the two others.
There are speeches to the audience in which characters comment on each other. Arguments blossom out from the painting to every aspect of their friendships. Each of the three men is a different kettle of fish, and it may be their differences that kept them together.
At the end Serge makes the supreme act of reconciliation and friendship. The last lines of the play spoken by Marc are moving and telling. He presents an interpretation of the painting and the real meaning of the picture and the play may be "no man is an island."
Try to see a flesh and blood acting version of this play. The script doesn't do it justice.

'Art' rules!

What can I say. This has to be one of my favourite plays of all time! It was also one of the most challenging plays that I prepared for as an amateur actor but ultimately extremely rewarding. Anyone looking for a 'killer' monologue should check out Yvan's 2 and a half page rant in the middle of the play.

A Superb Overview

Though I can't improve upon the Midwest Book Review's overview of this book, I hope it helps prospective buyers to know that two sources think INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN ARCHITECTURE is terrific. Especially pleasing are (by my count) the 216 colored photographs, which include a number of close-ups of details of buildings. Also excellent are the many line drawings that are included to show structural detail. For those who want an in-depth exploration of a particular period or type of Indian architecture, there are other (far more expensive) books to choose from. For one who is interested in ALL Indian architecture, however, this is the book to buy.

1/2/11 Update: Having just returned from India, I'm even more impressed with this book. It even has a section on the fascinating stepwells.

This large-format collection of Ware's early work, mostly from 1990 and 1991, repackages material that appeared in Acme Novelty Library as well as other publications, but still feels amazingly fresh. Even in these early strips, Ware displays a virtuoso ability in both rendering and storytelling. The material consists of primarily one or two page strips focusing on Quimby's remarkable bad luck in life and everything else. Quimby resembles a distant cousin of Disney's iconic Mickey Mouse, but instead of being a chipper mascot, he's a tiny, bleak figure travelling across a hostile world. The depressing subject matter is clothed in the peppy antics of primal cartooning, making the strong emotions that much more potent for being so surprising. All of the work is packaged impeccably-Ware's beautiful gold foil stamped cover alone is worth the book's price, while his running joke that the book is, in fact, a discarded library book is funny and touching, underscoring comics' ephemeral quality. Ware also provides a wonderful autobiographical introduction that gives the work context without ever explaining it; he simply adds another layer. Fans of Ware's earlier Jimmy Corrigan will find much to enjoy here; the tragicomic sensibility, beautiful drawing and impeccable packaging that marked that book are all here in full effect.

Ware's Jimmy Corrigan (2000) was the most critically acclaimed graphic novel of the last decade. Although this collection of his work won't receive the accolades its predecessor reaped, in some ways it attests even more strongly his mastery of the comics medium. Here Ware toys with the very essence of comics. In some stories, he slices and dices the narrative quite extraordinarily, meticulously dividing a single page into as many as 168 individual, postage-stamp-size panels. Elsewhere, in a more straightforward but equally painstaking manner, he lovingly draws in the styles of vintage newspaper comic strips, reproducing even their yellowed-newsprint backgrounds. The eponymous Quimby's adventures, such as they are, are essentially pointless, but that is the point. The nondescript cartoon rodent goes through mundane activities, punctuated by the occasional dread-inducing experience, with an emotional resiliency equivalent to the physical elasticity of his animated forbears. He is the existentialist Wyle E. Coyote. Fortunately, the gorgeousness of this oversize volume matches Ware's fastidiousness. A word on brilliance

To appreciate C. Ware's work is simple: his genius is hard to miss. From the palate he uses to construct seasons to the grotesques of characters reminiscent of certain 19th century tracts, the man is a master of his craft.
Oddly enough I have found not one mention of the man's ability to panel well. The way he (literally) lays out his pictoral narrative is nothing short of amazing and nowhere is this seen more clearly than in Quimby Mouse. What essentially boil down to rotoscopic images more fit for a flip-book than a strip of celluloid transparencies, Ware's frames are set down in a fashion that is entertaining _to work through_. And rest assured, you will be working: often times a single page can and will take you a good 20 minutes to read thouroughly. This is material not for the casual reader of comics, but for the artisan or art critic who needs stimulation that runs beyond the visceral.

Early work by Ware. Magnificent book design.

"Quimby" offers many pleasures, though this is not as substantial as "Jimmy Corrigan" is (or as "Rusty Brown" promises to become). Much of the work in this volume was done by Ware as an undergraduate(!) at U of Texas. It's probably not the best intro to Ware (that would be Jimmy Corrigan, or a recent issue of Acme Novelty Library), but it is a very welcome volume for those already hooked on his brilliant comics and witty sidebars. Much of this material was published in early Acme Novelty issues, but there's enough new and redisigned material here to justify Ware fans buying this one, even if you (like me) have the earlier editions already.

Heartbreakingly funny and touching

This book showcases works mainly published in the author's college newspaper, and as he points out with humor and apologies in tiny print, are mainly a request of his publisher after the success of "Jimmy Corrigan". The scenes in his comics are each different, each experimental in a way. And if you take the time (and I highly suggest you do) to read all the fine print scattered throughout the book, you will find that he drops the shield of humor and sarcasm in parts, to tell an autobiographical account of his life at the time he was creating the "Quimby" strips. After reading this, it is apparent that all of them carry a deep personal meaning for the author, and even without that knowledge - they would be fantastic. With it though, they are heartbreaking, thoughtful, and amusing - more often all three at the same time. Chris Ware has an amazing gift.

About the Author
Dr. Johanna K. Moisander is Professor of Corporate Communication at Aalto University School of Business, Department of Communication. Her research interests center on cultural and practice-based approaches to management and organization studies and consumer culture theory. At the moment, her empirical research focuses on media convergence and strategic change in the media industry.

I received my Ph.D. from the Aalto University School of Economics in 2004. Since 2005, I have acted as a marketing professor at the University of Lapland. Moreover, I have 10 years of business experience within creative knowledge industries. My research interests center, firstly, on cultural and critical approaches to consumption, marketing and tourism. Drawing upon practice-based approaches, anthropology, cultural studies, feminist studies and semiotics, I have explored topics such as body and gender, service work, knowing, sensing, and weather. Secondly, my research interests center on the development of qualitative research methodologies (ethnographies, focus groups, interviews, projective techniques, narratives). My most recent research project investigates sleep as a social practice in the context of tourism, consumer culture and media-intensive economy. The other recent project is concerned with the role of all the senses in the meaning-making processes of consumer culture and business organizations, moving thereby beyond the visual gaze.

Pompeii recreates in spellbinding detail one of the most famous natural disasters of all time. And by focusing on the characters of an engineer and a scientist, it offers an entirely original perspective on the Roman world.

Well researched and fascinating

It is August of 79 A.D. in the Bay of Naples and the Aqua Augusta, the aqueduct carrying water to the cities of the area, begins to dry up. Fish are mysteriously dying in their ponds. There are ground tremors and rock falls in the cities surrounding Mount Vesuvius. Some residents attribute these things to giants or to the wrath of the gods. But Marcus Attilius Primus, the aquarius, or water engineer of the Aqua Augusta, who is sent to Misenum to research and repair the problem, knows that there is a scientific explanation. As he tracks the aqueduct from its terminus in Misenum to Pompeii and then onward to the vicinity of Mount Vesuvius, he observes unusual natural phenomena, discovers the upheaval that disrupted the water flow, and realizes that an inevitable cataclysmic event is about to occur.
In this painstakingly researched story, Robert Harris has produced much more than a historical thriller. Although we know the story will end with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of the surrounding cities, Harris has built suspense by describing the mysterious disappearance of the former aquarius Exomnius and the attempts of the officials of Pompeii to prevent Attilius from discovering the truth. This book also provides fascinating detail on the culture of ancient Rome, from the feasts in the sumptuous villas to the ingenious plumbing in the bath houses. It provides details on the aqueduct system, a marvel of Roman engineering. Each chapter is prefaced with an excerpt from a treatise on volcanos that describes the causes of, and events occuring during, an eruption. The reader is entertained while learning all this, and is not overburdened with facts and figures.
The characters are well developed and fascinating. The brilliant writer, naturalist, and scholar Pliny the Elder, and the pompous and wealthy city developer Ampliatus come to life through Harris' talent. From slaves to powerful land barons, from laborers to statesmen, the reader is treated to all facets of the citizenry of ancient Pompeii. There is also a weakly developed love interest between Attilius and the daughter of Ampliatus. This is the one part of the story that would have been better if left out. Even with that flaw, the book is compelling reading with a built-in ancient history lesson.

Pompeii Comes Alive

Pompeii by Robert Harris has received some excellent reviews, and it was on the strength of these that I decided to read the book. I was not disappointed. Mr. Harris does have the gift of giving his reading the feel of a place and time. He breathes life into the late first century and presents the many facts and customs in a way that sparks interest and not boredom. The novel begins on August 22, 79 CE, and the chapters are cleverly organized following the Roman hours of the day and also give the actual hour when the events are taking place. Each chapter is prefaced with an excerpt from a technical work on volcanology that provides the reader with an idea of the activity going on inside Mount Vesuvius.
The story revolves around the Aqua Augusta, an aqueduct that the protagonist of the story, Marcus Attilius Primus, first becomes the aquarius (the person responsible for maintaining the structure) of the aqueduct and then searches for a break that prevents the flow of water to the drought stricken countryside. Atillius is a noble character, an imperial official who takes pride in his work and is incorruptible. But he is now in the self-proclaimed city-on-the-make: Pompeii.
Along the way we meet Ampliatus, a wealthy freedman who is, ironically, marrying his daughter to Popilius, his old master. Ampliatus represents a long line of uncouth and ambitious freedmen that came to dominate the principate in the early empire under Claudius and Nero. Mr. Harris paints a probing and revealing portrait of Ampliatus and draws an inevitable comparison with Trimalchio of Petronius' Satyricon, with the freedman presiding over a similar overly sumptuous banquet Ampliatus. As a classicist, I found the banquet scene a little too reminiscent of the novel by Petronius. The characterization was a little too close and I did not want a parody of that famous literary banquet scene. However, I think Mr. Harris more than makes up for identifying his character so closely with Petronius by giving him a darker and more ruthless side.
Ampliatus' daughter Corelia is the conscience that her father does not have. She is a teenager of marriageable age and chafes under the ruthless nature of her father and her own helplessness before her own loveless marriage. The novel presents an interesting portrait of Pliny the Elder that I found captured his interest in the world around him and his battle of filling his days with as much activity as possible. We also have the embittered Corax; the overseer of the men who maintain the aqueduct, an enemy of Attilius, who is ready to do anything to get rid of the "new man in town."
A central part of the story is the mysterious disappearance of Atillius' predecessor Exomnius. Is he alive or dead? Little by little Attilius pieces together Exomnius' background and his association with Ampliatus, a revelation that places his life in jeopardy. In the background is Vesuvius. We know the catastrophe that is about to happen and look on as the trembling of the earth raises the curiosity of Pliny and the rumblings of the volcano remind people of thunder and giants.
Pompeii is a well-conceived novel that presents a plausible story populated with flesh-and-blood characters. It is a fast-paced book that is a joy to read; a book that is hard to put down, and a must read for people interested in ancient history or who find the city of Pompeii a fascinating place.

History overshadows characterization

Everybody thinks they know about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius at Pompeii--79 AD . . .rivers of bubbling magma . . .citizens immortalized in pleading poses for all eternity by ash . . .the heedless rich getting their comeuppance from nature. Those basics are true, but Robert Harris reminds us that the eruption of Vesuvius was much more than that. It remains one of history's greatest and most dramatic disaster stories, and we know a great deal about it because one of the Roman Empire's greatest historians was there to write a blow-by-blow record of the destruction; and although Pliny did not survive, his report did.

Pompeii and Herculaneum were the Malibu and Santa Barbara of Rome. In the hot August of 79 AD, tourists were swarming to the cool coast to enjoy the luxury accommodations, crystal swimming pools, and elegant spas of the bayside resorts. Marcus Attilius is there too, but he's not there to enjoy the occasional cool breeze, he's there to work as the new aquarius of the Aqua Augusta--the new water engineer in charge of the enormous aqueduct that brings endless water flowing to the nine towns around the Bay of Naples. Springs are failing for the first time in centuries and the flow of water is being disrupted to hundreds of thousands of people. Attilius' family has worked on the great aqueducts for generations, but even he is bewildered by the cause of this crisis somewhere along the Aqua Augusta's sixty-mile line--a line that stretches along the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius.

The Roman aqueducts were an amazing feat, and Harris describes their workings in great detail. He does an excellent job of showing, not telling, and through Attilius and his crew he weaves an incredible amount of information into the narrative and it is fascinating. Also excellently done is his description of the various effects of the eruption--which lasted several days--where he uses Pliny's observation of the event of excellent effect. Pliny, historian and general, was also a very fat and cranky old man by 79 AD. He took one of his ships out into the bay to watch and record the devastation from what he thought was a safe distance. But too soon the ships in the bay were in danger from the roiling waves and huge chunks of pumice flying down off the mountain. Pliny had his scribes don helmets and take down his descriptions as clods of pumice bounced off the old general's uncovered head--"The pumice is less like rock than airy fragments of a frozen cloud." he dictates. "It floats on the surface of the sea like lumps of ice. Extraordinary!" Eventually it would clog the bay and begin to crush ships. Pliny knew he was too heavy and unsteady to escape the final firestorm from Vesuvius and ordered his scribes to save themselves and his precious reportage. Fortunately they did, and Robert Harris puts Pliny's observation to fine use in this novel.

Harris is a workmanlike writer with the gift of being able to integrate complicated information into a believable narrative. That's what made "Enigma" and "Fatherland" so interesting, and what works for "Pompeii." The characters are take second place to the setting, and are not particularly exciting. However, they respond to the extraordinary circumstances around them in ways that are completely consistent with their characterizations. It is the same with Harris' establishment of place. He offers no special explanations of Rome, but builds it all into the action. As a result the Roman world seems very immediate and almost modern.

W. Brian Rowe is a consulting engineer and recognized bearing expert with more than 30 years’ experience working on a wide range of machinery design problems across all industries. He has previously run courses on bearings at Coventry University in the UK and Stanford University in the USA, as well as sessions on the topic for industrial engineers in Chengdu, China. He has received awards in recognition of his work, including the Walter R. Evans Award for significant contributions to the field of rotor dynamics in 2004.
