Real deal beyond CRUD in rails!

I got modular rails because I was interested in moving from a monolithic app and interested in advancing my knowledge of intermediate to advanced rails. As a guy who teaches at a bootcamp, there comes a time when you want students to move from the usual CRUD nonsense and on to proper software architectural patterns even in the context of a framework.
I shared the table of contents with a colleague of mine from the US and he too agreed that this book was the deal.

About the Author
Robert L. Gould (Ph.D., University of California--San Diego) is a leader in the statistics education community. He has served as chair of the American Statistical Association's Committee on Teacher Enhancement, has served as chair of the ASA's Statistics Education Section, and was a co-author of the "Guidelines for Assessment in Instruction on Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report." As the associate director of professional development for CAUSE (Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education), he has worked closely with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) to provide traveling workshops and summer institutes in statistics (he also presented an AMATYC summer institute in 2009). For over ten years, he has served as Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at the UCLA Department of Statistics, and he is Director of the UCLA Center for the Teaching of Statistics. In 2012, Rob was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Colleen N. Ryan has taught statistics, chemistry, and physics to diverse community college students for decades. She taught at Oxnard College from 1975 to 2006, where she earned the Teacher of the Year Award. Colleen currently teaches statistics part-time at California Lutheran University. She often designs her own lab activities. Her passion is to discover new ways to make statistical theory practical, easy to understand, and sometimes even fun. Colleen earned a B.A. in physics from Wellesley College, an M.A.T. in physics from Harvard University, and an M.A. in chemistry from Wellesley College. Her first exposure to statistics was with Frederick Mosteller at Harvard. In her spare time, she sings with the Oaks Chamber Singers, has been an avid skier in the past, and enjoys time with her family.

Daily Guide to Miracles by Oral Roberts

I received this (2nd printing) book in LIKE NEW CONDITION. I read this book for the first time in the 1980's and Roberts' Seed Faith steps to "claiming my miracle" became a reality. It is a book that I have used many times over to teach my children about tithing and SEED-FAITH offerings-- when it is given in obedience and with the right attitude, it will return to you in due time.
I will also never forget a testimony I heard from a Southern California businessman while I was in college (1962-66). He claimed he wasn't a Christian, but he learned that HE COULD NEVER OUT-GIVE GOD. He made it a practice to tithe on his business profits, because when he didn't, his profit margin dropped. (I don't remember his name, but he owned a chain of grocery stores. I surely wish I could have heard his story upon his retirement.)

This is a book that I have bought several copies of and gifted it to friends. It is full of real-life experiences combined with the steps to learning how to pray. In a nutshell, Oral Roberts shares how God taught him to meet ALL his financial needs through SEED FAITH giving and prayer.

Great Series, please write more

I enjoyed the series very much but I wish it would continue because Chelsey and Melody never got their revenge for their family. their weddings should have been added to the story. Also there could be so more added to what became of Chelsey and Slade and their daughter. Also Melody and Liam need their own story, what happens next does she turn into a Lycan? Please continue to write more as I will love to read more about these characters. thanks for the great read

First off I have to say, please don't let this be the end! There is so much more story to be told. Slade and Chelsey now have a child that every one is going to want to control. We have vampires and lycans and the possibilities are endless. I promise you that you will not be dissatisfied with the characters or the story that this author has spun.

LOVED IT! LOVED THE BOOK, THE SERIES, THE NARRATION...ALL OF IT!!!

This is a great continuation to this series, and although I think it may be the last book in this story...I would like more! lol I love how the couples ended up and I really love that they had a vampire baby....this is a great PNR series, that will make you laugh and cry a little too...and definitely leave you wanting more! Great down to earth easy listening writing...and really good narration...I recommend!!!

I like that this contains a ring and all cards are hole punched in the upper left allowing you to add and remove cards as needed and take them easily on the go. They are comprehensive and helpful in studying origins, insertions and actions, though I was disappointed that facial muscles and the skull were limited. Also includes clinically relevant items and x-ray/MRI samples.

Could use some work

I used to just make cards on my own by scanning Netter's images from the main atlas I bought and just printing them on note cards. I picked up this product because I wanted to save myself the trouble of making a whole set.

The cards are of Netter's plates, but they lack a significant amount of detail compared to the plates in the Atlas of Anatomy. The bones are missing a huge number of landmarks and the muscle information on the back is the bare basics. If you're in a graduate program, these cards are not acceptable on their own. The pathologies were a nice touch, but again, if you're in a graduate program, the amount of detail given is so bare that it just comes off as trivial instead of informative.

The cards are beautiful and a good start, much better in quality than anything I could make myself. I actually think they're great now that I've went through and penned in all the landmarks missing from the actual plates, but I'm writing the review based on how they were out of the box. I made them as similar in detail to the main plates as possible, and now they're great for on the go study.

In conclusion, they're worth buying and just writing the missing things on the cards yourself. Out of the box they're only suited for undergraduate level anatomy classes.

...is to much. The cards are a little larger than I expected, but not a big deal. They are easy to use though. Some of the conditions and x-ray or mri images are to much. I just bought it for the basic anatomy, which is well provided.

About the Author
Steve Magness is a runner, coach, exercise physiologist, and a writer. He holds a M.S. from George Mason University in Exercise Science. Magness is the current cross country coach at the University of Houston and coaches professional runners including Jackie Areson (15th at 2013 world championships in the 5k), and multiple time world indoor competitor Sara Hall. In addition, he has worked for Nike, and served as a consultant to numerous Olympic runners and triathletes.

He has been a serious runner since the age of 14 and has had numerous running accomplishments ranging from holding the Texas High School mile record (4:01.02), to qualifying for NCAA nationals. His writing include work for Running Times, Competitor magazine, Runner's World, New Studies in Athletics, and numerous other publications.

Running With Science

In the past year, there have been a number of excellent books on training distance runners published: Greg McMillan's You (Only Faster), Owen Anderson's Running Science, Jack Daniels third edition of his Running Formula, Pat Tyson's update of Joe Newton's classic Coaching Cross Country Successfully and now the most recent addition to this list is Steve Magness's The Science of Running. For those of us who remember when the only guidance on the subject was Fred Wilt's How They Train and a quarterly publication, Track Technique, we appreciate their efforts.
Steve Magness's avowed purpose is to integrate the separate silos of coaching practices and research science. His own qualifications are impressive: high school phenom, disappointing college career followed by a quest to study the best coaches and coaching in the world and then his absorption of the science of running and exercise physiology (much of what appeared on his informative science of running blog). He also spent a stint with the Nike Oregon Project, seeing and supervising first hand the training of world class athletes. All this has been distilled into the Science of Running, a 331 page opus that is divided into two parts: the science and then the coaching.
Mercifully, the 144 page science section is not a biology lecture on mitochondria, lactate threshold, and VO2 Max concepts.True to his promise, he attempts to use science to guide training. One learns that there is no rational basis for the current fixation on the emphasis of running at VO2 max. Other insights include that there are numerous signaling pathways activated by different types of training that can accomplish the same adaptation, that sprinting is the best plyometric, the importance of correct biomechanics to optimize the storage of kinetic energy. Before transitioning into the coaching portion of the book, the author concludes that the disconnect between science and coaching can be attributed to science's need to test a single variable in isolation vs. the integrated environment that the coach needs to actually train his
athletes in.
The coaching section's central premise is that the athlete's training should be oriented on his muscle fiber types with separate training programs created for the two types of athletes. He explains different types of training for both muscle fiber types, starting with the 800 meter runner progressing all the way to the marathon. This approach is also used when discussing supplementary training such as core exercises and strength training. Despite the fact that we are now into the coaching section, science insights are still injected when evaluating training. For example, the reader learns that probably the best core training is to run at various speeds.

Steve Magness can be justifiably proud of his contribution to the literature of distance running training. And since this book is probably destined for several more editions, I would encourage him to improve his current edition in two ways. First, there are numerous typographical errors throughout the text, misspellings and missing letters, distracting but easily corrected. Secondly, there is no index, which makes retrieving some of his insights more difficult than necessary. Despite these shortcomings, this is an outstanding guide for any coach or runner, at any level, wishing to become better and / or faster.

Very poorly written, and nothing new. There are far better books on the market for less money.

Not worth your money, for several reasons:

1) The writing of this book would barely be acceptable for a high school student. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure are all miserable, and it makes the book exceedingly difficult to read. The concepts are there, but word choice and poor writing mechanics make it too hard to extract those concepts from the text. Several times I have had to re-read a section many times to figure out what he was trying to say, because of a missing comma, run-on sentence, or incorrect word choice (then vs. than, or except vs. accept or effect vs. affect). The author really needs an editor, but apparently decided against it.

2) There are no new concepts in this book. It seems the author set out to write a simplified version of Dr. Tim Noakes' "The Lore of Running," and succeeded only in restating and paraphrasing that book. The worst of it is that, because of the poor writing mechanics, the author of this book has failed to simplify the book he was mimicking, because the writing problems make it so much harder to grasp the concepts. He overly complicated another very fine text. It's not plagiarism, because he continually cites the source of his material, but since he uses so much of it wholesale, you might as well read the original source document.

3) Repetition. There are entire sections of this book that are copied and pasted from other sections. It's apparent that the author intended to reintroduce a concept before breaking it down and discussing it further, and did so by copying paragraphs straight out of the introductory chapter. There are better and more readable ways to do that. It ends up feeling as though the author decided in advance how many pages he wanted his book to be, and when he came up short on actual material, he started looking for ways to expand the word count with filler.

Good info, needs an editor

This book is packed with information. Steve obviously knows his topic and I found the science and physiological details very interesting, although they may go over the head of people without a background in science. He really does a good job of explaining the science of training and how different stressors create different adaptations and how to use that information to design training.

I hadn't seen his breakdown of athletes by muscle fiber type before and this section is very interesting because it explains how to adapt training plans and workouts based on whether a runner has predominately fast twitch or slow twitch muscle fiber for their event. This would help explain why, besides other genetic variations, different athletes respond to the same workouts differently. He definitely is not a fan of cooking cutter training plans and really gets into adapting training for the individual athlete.

He's also doesn't seem to be a fan of zone training and advises to through it out of the window. His classification of workout paces makes a lot of sense and has been proven effective by coaches such as Renato Canova. Also his explanation of funnel training was new to me and varies quite a bit compared to Lydiard type training.

So the fly in the ointment is the plethora of misspellings and grammatical errors and is the reason for not giving it 5 stars. They book just needs a good editor to go through it and help fix those basic errors and perhaps to refine the organization of the content and make it read better. The book is still quite readable, but it's been a long, long time since I've seen these kind of problems in the age of word processors.

A very fitting conclusion to this delightful series.

It is difficult to say which of the stories in the Outback Heat Series is my favorite. I have enjoyed them all with the third book being the most heart wrenching. However, I had been looking forward to Ethan’s finding his HEA ever since the first book, where he was such an overprotective big brother. The wait is over for in Some Girls Lie by Amy Andrews Ethan gets his due.
It seemed a bit contrived that Ethan and JJ would both need an instant love interest after all the years that they have known each other. But hey, stranger things have happened in real life. Besides it made an incredible story for these two to go from friends to lovers then try to be friends again. The lesson here is not going back especially when you truly love someone.

The plot works in ways not every author could pull off in a believable fashion like it is written here. The characters are authentic, likeable with Ethan’s daughter being adorable. I especially liked that Ethan and JJ don’t just love each other but like each other too. Then there is enough suspense to go with the drama to never get boring. A very fitting conclusion to this delightful series.

Long Term Love

Jemima Jane (JJ) Ericson has loved Ethan Weston her entire life but he is painfully unaware. To him, JJ is a friend. He has been in love with Delia since high school, married to her, divorced, and raising their daughter. Delia never stops causing problems for Ethan and he has sworn off love and marriage because of her.
JJ’s mean when he’s drunk, ex-husband is out of prison and back in Jumpback Springs wanting to get back with JJ. She will never get back with him as he had beaten her up once and never again. Ethan, knowing the trouble JJ’s ex can cause, makes her go and stay at his house until the ex is long gone. The problem is that Ethan and JJ had a passion-filled night and she, nor he, can forget it. He still refuses to even consider that he might love her. Maybe the lights will come on in his heart one day.

I really enjoyed this story. I have loved JJ from the start of the series and wanted to hit Ethan upside his head for not seeing what was in front of him. A great conclusion that ties up the Weston boys and their HEA.

Riddled with Errors, But It's the Only Game in Town

This is the first E-book I've read that had programming errors in it. I don't mean error in the SAS code (though there are some of those too) but errors in the way the book is read by the Kindle Reader for Android. More than once, I turned the page to find myself on the same page, and turned the page again to land on the same page, and again and again and again...yes the book gets stuck in an iterative loop. Ironically it is a book about programming.

Also, some of the quiz questions are tricky, which I guess is good, but some of the "correct" answers aren't correct in all circumstances. This may cause an experienced programmer to choose the "wrong" answer when in fact their choice makes better sense. For example, the correct answer to one question is that formats assigned in the data step are assigned permanently. This is NOT true if the dataset is a work dataset...I would choose temporarily, but according to the book, this is wrong.

If you want to study for the SAS Certification exam cheaply, this is the way to do it, in spite of the problems.

ADDENDUM: I have now taken the SAS Certification test and can add that this book does NOT COVER EVERYTHING ON THE TEST. Though I think there is enough information in this book to pass the test, it is no substitute for practical experience.

Horrid textbook... but it covers what you need

The book was rife with formatting atrocities, typos, and inane repetition. (I believe I counted 3 instances of exact same "operators in SAS" table, and the topic was introduced each time as though you'd never seen it before). Sometimes it felt like the author(s) were attempting to fill whitespace.
On the whole, the book reads like it was written by a non-native English speaker and evidence of editorial review is noticeably absent.

But...
As poorly written as the book is, it does the job of preparing you for the exam and lets you know what to study.
It is written by SAS, and they are the ones who ultimately write the exam. Still, I expect better.

All the necessary material to pass - but don't use it as exam prep

This book does an decent job of presenting all the information you will need to pass the Base SAS Certification Test. Yes, there are typos, but this is not uncommon in programming books, and the amount in this book (while annoying) are on par with what I'd typically expect from a book of this type. I've definitely seen books more.

However, the practice tests at the end of each chapter are relatively easy compared to what is on the exam. DO NOT USE ONLY THE END OF CHAPTER TESTS AS EXAM PREP. I am a generally very good in standardized testing environments, and I could answer all the end of chapter tests with at least 90% accuracy, but when I sat for my exam I was shocked to see that THE QUESTIONS ON THE EXAM ARE DIFFERENT AND REQUIRE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL THAN YOU WILL EXPECT BY JUST DOING THE BOOK'S SAMPLE QUESTIONS. I did not pass the exam the first time - I was livid. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that the sample questions in an official exam prep guide (purchased at significant cost) should give an accurate representation of what you will see on the exam. I ended up buying the practice exam (ya, you have to pay for a practice exam from SAS - I feel like it should come with the exam prep guide), and that was a more accurate representation of the test. I passed the second time.

Because this book provides the material but misrepresents the difficulty of the exam, I took of two stars. You need this book - there's nothing out there by a third party to replace it - but be careful. The exam is different than the book represents.
