Guardrails for your fantasy sports strategy
By Edward Chao
Dr. Miller writes in a simple and casual manner about some pretty nerdy things. I was able to quick read through the book in about an hour and a half, but I know it's a book that I'll come back to. The chapters are laid out like a checklist to help you strategize how you play the game of fantasy sports. This is not a book to tell you all of the secrets of setting the best lineup for any given week, but it's a book to help give you guardrails when you're rolling that bowling ball down the lane. That's probably the best way I can describe it. Plus, understanding cognitive biases is just good knowledge for people in general.

Excerpt from FantasyFreakout.com review
By Tim Bearden
[Dr. Miller] details the various ways in which everyone views fantasy sports-football being the most oft mentioned sport-and if you don't see yourself doing every last one of these topics you're either in denial or playing just to spend time with your significant other.

Dr. Miller takes a scientific approach to a game we all claim to be scientific about, but end up looking like frittatas in front of our friends, co-workers and/or mortal enemies. She breaks down the way we think about the game and how we use that analysis or school of thought to either rise to glory or flame out like Tim Tebow.

the smartest way to change your game
By Dylan Macturk
I recently read this book and it is safe to say that Renee Miller earned that Ph.D. Smart, funny and ultimately relatable (which is rare when dealing with a scientist), it really does give you a whole new way to look at the way you make your fantasy decisions. I am currently romping in fantasy MLS using a mindfulness in decision-making I previously lacked. More than that though, it challenged me to examine some of the attitudes and choices I make in other areas of my life. Basically, a total eye-opener. Highest recommendation.

Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot, published in 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community. The novel is set in the early years of the 19th century. Silas Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Two clues are given against Silas: a pocket-knife and the discovery in his own house of the bag formerly containing the money. There is the strong suggestion that Silas' best friend, William Dane, has framed him, since Silas had lent his pocket-knife to William shortly before the crime was committed. Silas is proclaimed guilty. The woman he was to marry casts him off, and later marries William Dane. With his life shattered and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city.

Marner heads south to the Midlands and settles near the village of Raveloe, where he lives as a recluse, lapsing into bouts of catalepsy, and existing only for work and the gold he has hoarded from his earnings. The gold is stolen by Dunstan ('Dunsey') Cass, the dissolute younger son of Squire Cass, the town's leading landowner. Silas sinks into a deep gloom, despite the villagers' attempts to aid him. Dunsey disappears, but little is made of this not unusual behaviour, and no association is made between him and the theft.

Godfrey Cass, Dunsey's elder brother, also harbours a secret. He is married to, but estranged from, Molly Farren, an opium-addicted woman of low birth. This secret threatens to destroy Godfrey's blooming relationship with Nancy, a young woman of higher social and moral standing. On a winter's night, Molly tries to make her way into town with her two-year-old child, to prove that she is Godfrey's wife and ruin him. On the way she takes opium, becomes disoriented and sits down to rest in the snow, child in arm. The child wanders from her mother's still body into Silas' house. Upon discovering the child, Silas follows her tracks in the snow and discovers the woman dead. Godfrey also arrives at the scene, but resolves to tell no one that she was his wife.

Silas decides to keep the child and names her Eppie, after his deceased mother and his sister, Hephzibah. Eppie changes Silas' life completely. Silas has been robbed of his material gold, but has it returned to him symbolically in the form of golden-haired Eppie. Godfrey Cass is now free to marry Nancy, but continues to conceal the existence of his first marriage—and child—from her. However, he aids Marner in caring for Eppie with occasional financial gifts. More practical help and support in bringing up the child is given by Dolly Winthrop, a kindly neighbour of Marner's. Dolly's help and advice help Marner not only to bring up Eppie but also to integrate her into village society.

Sixteen years pass, and Eppie grows up to be the pride of the town. She has a strong bond with Silas, who through her has found inclusion and purpose in life. Meanwhile, Godfrey and Nancy mourn their own childless state. Eventually, the skeleton of Dunstan Cass—still clutching Silas' gold—is found at the bottom of the stone quarry near Silas' home, and the money is duly returned to Silas. Shocked by this revelation, and coming to the realisation of his own conscience, Godfrey confesses to Nancy that Molly was his first wife and that Eppie is his child.

From Library Journal
This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.

Review
"I think Silas Marner holds a higher place than any of the author's works. It is more nearly a masterpiece; it has more of that simple, rounded, consummate aspect. . .which marks a classical work." --Henry James

A book for all times, but not for all readers
By Susan E. Hallander
Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.
Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed.
When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.
Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

A Tale of the Redeeming Power of Love
By R.J. Robledo
Silas Marner is an excellent classic novel set in early Nineteenth Century England. In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fiancée, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness.
But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften.
This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.

Pure gold
By Peter Reeve
If you have a heart, the story of Silas Marner will warm it. You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success, by Emma Seppala

A leading expert on health psychology, well-being, and resilience argues that happiness is the key to fast tracking our professional and personal success.

Everyone wants to be happy and successful. And yet the pursuit of both has never been more elusive. As work and personal demands rise, we try to keep up by juggling everything better, moving faster, and doing more. While we might succeed in the short term, it comes at a cost to our well-being, relationships, and, paradoxically, our productivity. In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that’s thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents; and that achievement cannot happen without stress.

The Happiness Track demolishes these counter-productive theories. Drawing on the latest findings from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience—research on happiness, resilience, willpower, compassion, positive stress, creativity, mindfulness—Seppala shows that finding happiness and fulfillment may, in fact, be the most productive thing we can do to thrive professionally. Filled with practical advice on how to apply these scientific findings to our daily lives, The Happiness Track is a life-changing guide to fast tracking our success and creating the anxiety-free life we want.

In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala
By Reading and Musing
In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, (a Ph.D. from Stanford) notes that in today's society, we strive for happiness and success, but often find both unattainable. We learn that in order to be happy, we need to be successful.

We grow up believing that we need to find a passion at a young age, focus solely on this passion, and work ourselves to the bone so that we can become masters in this field. We tell ourselves that the stress, anxiety and exhaustion that we feel as the result of our work-horse mentality, only means that we're on the right track.

But Seppala argues that the reverse is true -- that in order to be successful, we need to be happy. In order to be happy, we need to take care of ourselves; focusing on our mental well-being, taking necessary work breaks, and remaining mindful and present throughout our every day lives.

Through scientific studies, anecdotal notes, and interviews, Seppala explains just how happiness lends itself fully to success, and provides concrete methods for improving our personal day-to-day happiness factors.

My colleague loves mindful meditation. He gave me this book as a result of multiple conversations about this practice, and while this book is unlike any that I would normally choose for myself, I truly enjoyed it.

The chapters (and my thoughts on each) are as follows:

1 - Stop Chasing the Future. Seppala notes that we're taught to always be looking forward. We're never able to appreciate our achievements, because as soon as we come close to reaching our goal, we're already looking to make progress on the next goal. We miss out on the good things happening around us now.

She's right. The timelines and deadlines I've arranged for myself throughout the years are innumerable. I'm organized and I like structure, so I set goals, and deadlines in all facets of my life. As soon as I finish one thing, I have ten other tasks lined up. I never feel fully at ease in my day, because I'm always looking to make headway in endeavors I haven't yet reached. It's stressful, and I'm always tired. It's no way to live.

2 - Step Out of Overdrive. Seppala states that we need to slow down. The United States is one of the most stressed out privileged nations in the world. Our anxiety costs us billions of dollars per year. 70% of mental health doctors' visits are due to anxiety and stress. This is unfortunate, but it's not any one person's fault. It's the result of a society that values competition and around-the-clock work over our health and mental well-being.

I make jokes all the time about other people contaminating me with their "contagious" stress. Turns out though -- I'm right! When you're stressed, or anxious, your pheromones project this into the air. Others can literally catch your stress. No wonder Americans suffer from such significant mental health issues! And yet, we stigmatize those who reach out for help with a callous "Buck up. It's not that bad." No. Don't "buck up." Get help. You should feel welcome to take care of yourself without judgment. Our attitudes are conflicting and nonsensical.

Our unhealthy need for competition, and desire to always be "on" leads to absurd amounts of multi-tasking. Because we spend so much time multi-tasking, we make mistakes, and never fully commit to the task at hand. By slowing down, we'll not only make less mistakes in the work we do, but we'll enjoy each task more, and feel less aggravation and stress.

3 - Manage Your Energy. Only put your energy toward things that really matter. If the task doesn't require all of your energy, then don't give it all of your energy. Save your high intensity emotions for things that require high intensity.

4 - Get More Done by Doing More of Nothing. I found this chapter so interesting. Seppala discussed how some of the most influential and innovative people of our time came up with their life-changing ideas. Guess where their bouts of genius didn't occur? At work. In their email. In a staff meeting. Sure -- these people worked hard, and tended to their emails, but they also took time out for themselves. They golfed. They fished. They took vacations. In doing these things, in giving their minds rest, they were able to recharge and rejuvenate. Then, because their brains were awake and fully functioning, they were able to tap into their creativity, and create world-altering inventions. It makes sense.

5 - Enjoy a Successful Relationship With Yourself. Be nice to yourself. We live in a society that demands perfection -- and we're horrible to ourselves when we don't achieve it.

Think about how terrible you feel when someone constantly belittles you. Isn't it awful? So then, why constantly belittle yourself? It's not helpful. Accept your mistakes and your shortcomings, and move on.

Also, allow yourself to indulge in activities that do not play to your strengths. If you're not willing to try anything outside of your comfort zone, you're stifling your creativity.

We've created a society in which failure isn't an option. People are afraid to try new things, or to take risks. Because of this, we don't even know what amazing inventions or ideas we could be missing out on. I'm not preaching at you -- to my own detriment, my least favorite thing in the world is to fail.

6 - Understand the Kindness Edge. This was another of my favorite chapters. As we grow through life, we're taught "Look out for yourself. No one else will. Do what you need to do to get ahead. Don't worry about those you need to trample on your climb to the top."

People who follow this mindset often find themselves burned out and alone. Their learned narcissism slowly starts to make them insane. The result of this is an intense unhappiness, and often a mental breakdown.

Leaders, managers, and bosses who are kind, who take the time to listen, who worry about their employees' success, find their own success. Their employees are loyal to them, and work hard for them. Because their employees are happier to do their jobs, their work often yield incredible results.

Success is the result of kindness. I'm lucky -- because I work for this type of person. Unfortunately - he's the first boss I've had who practices this methodology.

Seppala also introduced different ways to achieve a sense of calm. She discussed different mindful meditation practices, yoga courses, art classes, breathing exercises, and nature retreats.

As someone who is anxious, busy, and feeling "behind" much of the time, this book truly resonated with me. I took from it many different activities that I plan to incorporate into my day-to-day in order to increase my daily happiness factor.

However, while I love the idea of practicing happiness and mindfulness, my concern is -- unless everyone is practicing such, will it really be possible to drive any truly positive change? For example, if you work for a boss who values overtime work, will you get fired if you say, "Nah. I'm taking today off."? I'm not sure.

Either way -- I highly recommend reading this book. For the rest of my reviews, go to readingandmusing.com

Excellent! One of the Best! Here’s my Summary and Review-
By Amp Van Zandt
This book shows you how happiness and productivity go hand in hand. It is broken up into 6 decent sized but not overwhelmingly long chapters. The author makes her case by showing how new research (and also some old research) has overturned myths about productivity and success. Here are a few samples of the myths she confronts-

Myth 1: You must work nonstop, in an all work no play life in order to be successful. The author refers to this as being in “overdrive”. In its place she gives the evidence that shows how taking breaks, having hobbies, and other forms of relaxation increase your productivity in the long haul.

Myth 2: In order to succeed, you must be your own worst critic. This myth serves as a backdrop against chapter 5, where the author makes the case for self-compassion as a profound tool to get more done, be happier, and even live longer.

These are good examples of the overall theme of the book- you don’t have to kill yourself and be miserable today, in order to be happy tomorrow or to fulfill your dreams. That living a life that makes you happy in the present can also lead to greater productivity and long-term success is a bold claim, but the case is made with such strength you have to accept it. This is one of the most thoroughly documented and research based self-help books I’ve ever read. After the final chapter, the next 30 pages are lists of all the research, interviews, and other academic books she cites for each of the 6 chapters. For this, and for the fact that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening read, I just have to give this book my highest recommendations. I’ve been studying success and productivity systems for 20 years, and this book is top of the line. It has really helped round out my perspective and knowledge about getting ahead in life.

A great practical resource for the over-driven and exhausted
By M.M.
This book is extremely well-written. Dr. Seppala successfully hits the mark on all three criteria of a timeless self-help book, namely (a) clear and easy to read, (b) containing practical, easy to follow advice (e.g., how powerful a wellness tool something as simple as deep, slow breathing can be), and (c) solid scientific evidence to back up all the advice. What makes this book truly remarkable is how Dr. Seppala packs in a treasure trove rigorous research while keeping the text consistently accessible and readable.

As an over-driven individual in a high pressure work environment, I go through cycles of really high energy, engagement in work, and productivity followed by cycles of collapse. Chapter 3, 'Managing Your Energy', has been extremely helpful to me in understanding why: apparently positive high intensity emotions such as enthusiasm have the same exhausting physiological impact as high intensity negative emotions like anger, so while high energy positive emotions are essential to happiness when they occur in small doses, chronic indulgence in them (something American society and professional cultures encourage and reward) is damaging to health. Chapter 3 has motivated me to very seriously rethink how I should manage my enthusiasm and engagement, traits I have always seen as unambiguously positive even though they contribute to regular periodic collapse. A second lesson in energy management the books discusses is the concept of 'satisficing', i.e., to maximize long-term happiness and productivity, one has to be judicious about which tasks to devote one's best effort to vs. which ones to hold back on and be just good enough. While I have known this conceptually, it was only after reading this book make a science-based case for it that I was able to hold back and do a merely good-enough job on a work project, something I have never been able to do before.

Another message that I implemented immediately in my life after reading the book is that of self-compassion. I was being asked to take on a project at work that was challenging to an unhealthy degree. I see myself as someone who, to my detriment, never backs away from a challenge, no matter how impossible. The emphasis on self-care and self-compassion in the book helped me listen to my intuition that the project was going to be injuriously stressful, and explain to my management very constructively but honestly what I needed to make the project realistic, and lo and behold, my management agreed!

Fun teen romance
By jewels
This is a fun YA novel that follows a high school junior, Hannah Brewster, as she navigates the treacherous waters of teenage love. Of course, such a journey is fraught with drama - which Hannah should be well equipped to handle since she is a "drama kid". Hannah's a typical teenage girl who has had a crush on Kyle for about 3 years now. She has loved him from afar & hopes to get his attention this year by auditioning for the female lead in the school musical that he wrote. Then there's Josh, new transfer to the high school & sports all-star who manages to also audition for the musical and land the lead male role (much to the chagrin of Kyle).

I loved that this novel had a definite "teenage vibe" going. It read and felt like a teenage romance. I think that sometimes adults read YA expecting the kids to act like adults do, when teenage romance is a completely different beast. Teens are easily blinded by love and are often fickle in love too. I felt that the plot was solid and that there was decent character development.

I'll admit that I got a bit frustrated with Hannah, but once again - it's typical teenage behavior, so it's to be expected. There was definitely some variety in Hannah's family. Drama and general family craziness kept it light and fun. I did appreciate how Hannah and her mom were able to have a conversation around Harlow and her influence on the younger girls and how their parents interacted with them. That interaction is one example that helped to give a bit of depth to the story.

What I didn't like: 3 things in particular. First, Grandma and Duke. It's one thing for Grandma to be dating a man 30 years her junior. It's another thing entirely when Duke meets Grandma at a strip club, where he works, when she participates in "amateur night". Not exactly something I would expect in YA clean fiction. My second beef is with the party scene. Hannah is a junior in high school. Her older sister Harlow is a junior in college. Harlow brings Hannah to a party where the first thing Harlow does is drink two shots out of another girl's belly button and then takes off with a guy, not to be seen again that night. This book is labeled as "clean", but this is not appropriate content for clean YA. Finally, the end. Specifically the fact that a freshman girl, her upperclassman boyfriend, and then a junior along with her boyfriend all fly out to Las Vegas together. Really? Once again, not what I would expect from clean YA.

Not well written, unappealing protagonist
By VB
Because of all the positive reviews, I'd assumed the novel would be, if not deep, at least amusing. I assumed wrong.

The protagonist is a junior girl in high school who wins a part in a play and the two boys that vie for her attention. However, the characterization is badly done. For example, the novel opens with the protagonist declaring her undying love for Kyle who she has watched from afar for quite a while. One would assume if she's been watching him that she'd notice what a complete lout he is, but one would be wrong. When he finally notices her, she seems so surprised at his bad behavior. It doesn't fit.
Further, while the author throws in other elements designed to make the story amusing (I suppose) such as a grandma dating a man in his 20s and a PE teacher who reminds her of Richard Simmons, none of it works. I found I didn't really like spending time with the heroine and hearing her thoughts and the story itself came across as clunky and unreal. This will be the last book I'll read by this author.

High school musical with competing guys
By J. Gunnar Grey
Overall this was a fun read. I enjoyed the main characters, Hannah and Josh, who were well developed, realistic, and entertaining as they lived through their high school musical, and as Hannah worked through her feelings for competing guys. The supporting cast might have been better individuated (Mike? who's Mike?) but their roles weren't so heavy that this became an issue, and the ones whose roles mattered were sound. And I love Hayley, and Grandma. Everyone should know a Grandma. Seriously.

Two issues knocked off that last star. First, the setting and background vanished, rather than framed the story. A few sentences of description stand out in my memory, but I never got that feeling of texture that a solidly thought-through background gives. Second, the editing seemed to break down after the play's opening night. The smooth writing style Liz Botts displayed for the first three-quarters of the book loses some of its rhythm, and "telling" the story began outweighing the "showing." Neither interfered tremendously with my enjoyment, though. A good, lively read.
