Fun and informative
By Robin Landry
When I bought this book I saw that it was a series, and after reading this book, I'm sold. This book is so well set up that it's easy to go from movie to movie, starting with the 1902-1931 visionary movies. I have to admit that I haven't seen many of these but they are laid out on a time line that shows how the movies slowly built from a 46 second short to movies with talking in them, though the last movie of this series is the Charlie Chaplin hit silent movie City Lights.

Each movie is broken down to in context which gives you the genre, director, writers, stars and then some movies that have either come before, or after the title movie. There's a box where you learn a little something about the director and other movies he also directed. In large block letters above the title of the movie, there is whatever saying the movie might be famous for.

The book is broken up into these sections.
Visionaries 1902-1931
A Golden Age In Black And White 1931-1949
Fear And Wonder 1950-1959
Rebel Rebel 1960-1974
Angels And Monsters 1975-1991
Small World 1992-Present

There were many movies I'd never seen, yet with this book, I feel as if I can get the main theme of the movie, who was in it, who directed and why it's significant. There are even gems like Travis Bickle's(Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver) transformation, something you might not have realized or seen drawn out so clearly. With it's wonderful movie photos, this book reminds me of the books I used to buy for the kids(the Ripley's believe it or not). I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for other books in the series that have a subject that sparks my interest.

Another fine Big Ideas work
By in1ear (John Row)
I'm a fan of the concept of Big Ideas Simply Explained books by DK. This is a good general reference regards the topic of movie history in my opinion. There are chapters that cover a movie of note, headed by a relevant quote, description of genre, silent era, sci-fi, drama, etc., with brief suggestions of why the movie stands out. There is information on directors of each movie. Actors, cinematography techniques, importance of musical score if relevant.
In the back of the book lists of important movies not given a chapter of their own seem like "honorable mentions". With a follow up paragraph or so of insight into the relevance of that movie.
It did whet my appetite to learn more and see some of the movies covered that I may have missed.

Big Ideas TOO Simply Explained
By Ivo Shandor
The problem with any book of movie history is the question of which movies to include and which to leave out. The authors acknowledge this, stating in the introduction “this book chooses its movies as an atlas of influence, a collection of landmarks, and the hope is that … there will be at least one movie that readers will choose to watch for the first time.” Which seems odd, because there are many movies here (especially those covered in only one page) that don’t give any explanation as to why they were deemed worthy of knocking other, more well-deserving films off the list. It is hard to believe anyone would approach an encyclopedia of “landmark” films and choose to leave out “The French Connection,” “The Poseidon Adventure,” “Halloween,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Ghostbusters,” “Die Hard,” “Basic Instinct,” “Silence of the Lambs,” “Seven,” and every James Bond movie ever made. It seems hard to believe that a book alleging to include “influential” films would give “Star Wars” only 182 words (about the length of this paragraph) in a 350-page book.

There is little “behind the scenes” material here. Regarding “Nosferatu,” we are told simply that it was “nearly destroyed following a lawsuit” and that’s it – just that sentence. This is not a book about moviemaking, it is an encyclopedia of movies that have been made. Each one includes a footnote called “What Else to Watch” which unfortunately includes not only movies that aren’t clearly obvious why they are relevant to the movie being discussed, but also includes some movies so bad they should never be recommended at all. As an example of the former, the “Star Wars” entry says to also watch “The Hidden Fortress” but doesn’t tell you WHY. (Film buffs, of course, will already know why.) As an example of the latter, no one should ever bother to waste their time with the ludicrous horror movie “It Follows.”

A few entries include timestrips called “Minute by Minute,” which show you how many minutes into the film certain plot events happen. There really doesn’t seem to be any point in including these other than as an excuse to create some kind of visual infographic to help fill the page. It’s odd that a book about a visual medium like film would be that desperate trying to come up with something visual to show.

The final chapter is called “Directory” and lists an additional 88 movies that “came close to being included in the main section, but did not quite make the final cut.” These films – like “The Jazz Singer,” “Psycho,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “E.T.” – are mentioned in passing, with a paragraph of approximately 75 words each, which certainly does not do them justice given the alleged context of the book.

“Big Ideas Simply Explained” is a nice idea for a book series, and a big book of movies is a nice idea for a book, but unfortunately this book too often picks the wrong ones to include. If you want a good encyclopedia of “landmark” and “influential” films, start elsewhere.

Highly Illuminating Book. Buy It Now!
By B. Marold
`3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated' by computer scientist extraordinare and lifelong Lutheran, Donald E. Knuth is one of those truly unique books which seems to be perfectly composed to illuminate a subject virtually everyone takes for granted. The best analogy I can think of in another field is the little book `The Elements of Style' by Strunk and White, which provides a brilliantly concise set of instructions on writing better.

Knuth's book is a wondrous amalgam of at least three different interests, Christianity, Computer Science, or more exactly, meticulous scholarship, and the art font design and calligraphy. The very title of the book has a dual meaning in that Knuth's commentary illuminates the 59 selected verses from the bible, plus the very artistic renderings of these texts by 59 of the world's greatest calligraphers, in much the same way that they may have been `illuminated' in Medieval hand-written copies of the Bible.

I am tempted to call this `Bible Commentary for Dummies', but it does not have the glib, simplistic tone of the `Dummy' franchisee. What it does share with this series is that it is a superb introduction to the world of Bible scholarship and the fact that the history of those words on the printed page of your Bible have a density of meaning and penumbra of alternate interpretations which will boggle the mind.

While Bible commentary is a major field of professional scholarship, my sense is that the average Christian is not nearly as caught up in the discussion of scripture as their Jewish brethren. In fact, the Hebrew embraces one of the classic methods of enlightenment, which is deep study of the Torah and Talmud and the many historical commentaries made of these sacred books. Where the average devout Jew will spend much time reading his Maimonides, I suspect very few Lutherans spend much quality time reading the writings of Luther, let alone St. Augustine or even Jonathan Edwards.

These 59 verses, the 16th verse after the beginning of Chapter 3 of each book were basically chosen at random to be the text for a Bible study class conducted by Knuth at his church several years ago. The only verse not chosen at random was this verse from the Gospel of John, which is arguably the most important verse in all of the New Testament. Knuth picked this number because he wanted to be sure that at least one out of all the verses would be interesting and important. He was probably as surprised as his readers to find that every verse had much to offer, as long as Knuth gave each his thorough scholarship that placed the words of the text in their context.

Of course, one can wonder, which translation did Knuth use? It turns out that Knuth did original translations of all the verses from the original Hebrew and Greek, and, he says this was one of the very best decisions he ever made in his intellectual live. This is primarily because there is literally very little consensus on the correct translation of the source text, assuming there is even agreement on what the source text should actually be. The second and possibly more important reason for his reader is that a new translation, especially of the more familiar texts, will give one a new and better perspective than the same old King James quote or some other of the dozens of modern translations.

For each verse, there are three pages of text plus one full page of art giving the calligrapher's interpretation of the text. All of the calligraphic works are beautiful to look at. Most are pretty standard, letting the ingenuity of the font and standard transformations of size and coloring to convey emphasis or special effect. Some, however, are far more imaginative, incorporating pictures and even mirror images of text to help `illuminate' the words. While the range of styles is great, my first impression is the work of Ben Shawn with mixing words and pictures.

My only argument with this volume is that Knuth does little to explain much of the reasoning behind his selection and his method of scholarship. Fortunately, he has done this in a more recent book, `Things a Computer Scientist Rarely Talks About' which dedicates much of his six lecture to the background to this book, both its art and its scholarship. In this book, for example, we learn of both the many pitfalls to accurate translation, and how a person with no knowledge of either Hebrew or Greek could go about translating these texts. The secret lies in the enormous body of concordances compiled over the years which detail everything you will ever want to know about each and every Hebrew and Greek word in the Bible.

I found it ironic that while Knuth indicated that a really good translation had to go so far as to pay attention to the way the author of a particular chapter used their words, in the commentary, he jumps thousands of years to use references to the New Testament (originally Greek) to explain concepts in the Old Testament (originally Hebrew).

While I think this is a superb introduction to the material and techniques of really diligent Bible study, one will get much more out of this book if you have at least two other books at hand. The first is a good, modern Bible translation to look up the hundreds of verses cited in the text. The second is a set of really good maps of the ancient lands of and around Palestine and modern Israel. `The Oxford Bible Commentary' has an especially good set of maps covering various periods of the Bible texts.

While I may not be the best person to judge this, I do believe there is no particularly strong Lutheran bias in the scholarship, although Luther is cited more often than many major Christian commentator.

This book is a real gem. Read it from cover to cover!

Very Interesting
By Mark Nenadov
This is a truly unique work. Knuth has obviously studied a lot in order to produce this study and it shows. The concept in and of itself, composing a book of 3:16 of every book of the Bible that contains the said verse, is unique. And the word art is truly wonderful touch. And the overview of each book of the Bible being covered is great.

I don't necessarily agree with every single thing that Knuth says here, but generally I found his comments to be very deep and insightful. Knuth here shows that many of the good attributes of a computer scientist can be applied to Bible study, with great results.

Truly one can be a man of faith and a man of reason, logic, and science. I highly recommend this book for any interested Christian who also is involved in Computer Science. If for nothing else, it is a worthwhile on the basis of the scripture word-art alone.

Audience, Agency and Identity in Black Popular Culture (Studies in African American History and Culture), by Shawan M. Worsley

Audience, Agency and Identity in Black Popular Culture analyses black cultural representations that appropriate anti-black stereotypes. Using examples from literature, media, and art, Worsley examines how these cultural products do not rework anti-black stereotypes into seemingly positive images. Rather, they present anti-black stereotypes in their original forms and encourage audiences not to ignore, but to explore them. Shifting critical commentary from a need to censor these questionable images, Worsley offers a complex consideration of the value of and problems with these alternative anti-racist strategies in light of stereotypes’ persistence. This book furthers our understanding of the historical circumstances that are influencing contemporary representations of black subjects that are purposefully derogatory and documents the consequences of these images.

Good book, except for the tab of Darlin Cory
By Stu
I think the book captures each song good enough, with correct tab for at least one solo to each tune. A few elements are missing from some of them (with Doc's styles it is always so much going on that those fine details are easy to leave out or miss).

The tabs are not easy, even if it may seem so at first look. You will need some experience on playing the clawhammer style if you are to master the arrangements.
I also recommend trying to learn his substitution for the drop-thumb, because Doc Watson uses it whenever possible. It is important if you really want to learn his style.

The 'usual drop-thumb' technique I am refering to here is:
striking one string and then follow with the thumb on either string above, except the 5th string.

He instead uses multiple ways of 'off-string pull-offs' upwards :

(Example): Strike the first string and immediately add a pull-off on one of the above strings, even if it is fretted. The old book 'Songs of Doc Watson' has short tune section on the banjo where this can be seen in the tabs, although there's no clear description there.

The difference between the drop-thumb and Doc Watson style is excellently illustrated in the tune "Ramblin' Hobo" which is given first in a regular drop-thumb arr. and then in the correct variant.

Froggie went a Courtin' (from Essential... , same as the 'Home Again!' album version) is captured great, (also one of the three banjo tunes in 'Songs of Doc Watson')

Shady Grove (finally the banjo solo in print! , and correct too, although some more ideas in it could have been added, because there's lot going on there, but still it is great).

Merle Watson's clawhammer style is represented nicely on Cuckoo Bird.

Now to the downsides: While the tab for Darlin' Cory is correct melody- and stylewise, I don't know why the author has placed it in Double-C-tuning, when Doc clearly plays in open-D (graveyard tuning f#Df#AD) on the Legacy record , which he or his brother also played on the Folkways LP 'Watson Family' (now on the Smithsonian CD).
As in 'Country Blues' he gets a modal sound through this tuning (On 'Country Blues' the banjo was tuned a half or a whole step down).
The author maybe has another recorded source for Darlin Cory I don't know of, but open-D it is for the Legacy version. It also sounds better.

Otherwise, the tab is simple enough to read, (if you don't use the iPad or likewise you can view it on your computer).
No printing available at the moment.

The only other good lesson for his style that I have found is Mike Seeger's Homespun Video ' Oldtime Banjo Styles '(rel 1994) where there is an excellent segment of Doc Watson at Merlefest 1991 teaching quite many tunes and his different styles.

Is this the best format?
By RichM
I'm sure this is good tab and all, and the price is right. But I have the font size in my Kindle bumped up considerably, and I still can't make the tab out. Wouldn't it be possible to format the tab in landscape so it could be larger and fit on the page?

Tabs are good but difficult to practice from
By Amazon Customer
The tabs in this ebook are well written, but they are difficult to play becsuse the pages are not printable. This is not a unique problem to Kindle books, however. I'll spend more time looking for banjo tabs in PDF format or other printable formats before I buy more ebook tablature.

"Having observed the progress of many watercolor students over the years, I can make a few informed generalizations about the limits we put on our own range. Most common of all is the tendency to stop short of the deep, rich, darks the image may require, This is why it is especially important to ask late in the painting process: Are the darks dark enough?
Of course, certain technnical concerns can affect how dark the paint can be, but these can usually be solved with a piece of practice paper and a spirit of inquiry. The trickiest issues seem to have more to do with psychology than technique. For example, all watercolor paint dries lighter than it appears when it is wet. This is always true. You knew it the first week you started painting, right? There comes a point after which it is just plain silly to use this as a reason for not getting dark enough darks. You've got practice paper. Do the work, and make sure. You are the one who is in charge of your paintings."

Not Just for Watercolor Painters
By M Sharkey
I, too, have had the good fortune to study with Tom Hoffmann. Although I primarily work in oils and pastels, Tom's approach to painting, summarized in this excellent book, has proven very useful for me in terms of the types of questions one must ask before applying any paint to the surface. The processes outlined in the book have helped me to stay fresh in my paintings. The title of this book could easy have been "Confident Strokes" - for that is the essence of Tom's teaching. Something that I and many others that I know strive for in our work.

Hoffmann's wry humor and personal tone, never preachy, make this book very approachable. He writes from his own learning and in no way implies that he is better than anyone else - only that he has a lot of experience in both painting and teaching. For example, he includes examples of his own unsuccessful watercolors (one is even titled "Flop") in order to point out how he can succumb to the same problems as anyone else. He guides the reader along in a journey of learning, never assuming that it is easy and always assuming that the one holding the brush is ultimately making the decisions about their painting. This is no "how to" book with all the answers. It is more like a book of questions: what are the important decisions that painters might make to help them through the painting process?

The emphasis is that one should know the answers to some of these questions BEFORE the brush touches the paper. Hoffmann walks the reader through the process of making preliminary sketches and repeated testing. These exercises allow the artist to work through the issues in a meaningful way. In making deliberate choices, there is less risk of overworking and more probability of success and reward in making confident strokes that give way for the medium to assert itself naturally and beautifully.

The final chapter is an appropriate summary to the whole book on becoming your own teacher, offering a suggested list of questions one can use to remember key points through all stages of painting. Deserving as this is as a final chapter, it is written through the entire book that we are the experts on our own success, not he nor any other teacher.

Oh - and the images chosen are an excellent selection of Hoffmann's work and that of other watercolor artists from all over the world.

Full of Little Gold Nuggets
By Carole P
I bought this book somewhat reluctantly because while the description and other reviews sounded good, the preview of the feature paintings didn't thrill me that much. To be honest, I'm not all that keen on the author's artistic style. And being an artist, I am nothing if not particular when it comes to visual things.

However, I went ahead and bought it. And don't you know--once I dug in, I was compelled to read it cover to cover. Hoffman distills the craft of making good watercolor paintings to its fine essence, with concepts that are easy to wrap your brain around and easy to imagine applying in your own work. Every page offers some important little insight or key pointer that is presented in a way that I've not seen in other books--often delivered with some gently acerbic humor which I enjoyed. As I progressed through the book, Hoffman's paintings grew on me a bit because they were so illustrative of the concepts he covers. Of course, there is work by artists other than Hoffman, and I appreciated that because it helps to see works in different styles which all demonstrate a particular concept effectively but in different ways. It is a thinking book though...if you are looking for simple formulas for how to paint a good picture, you won't find them here. This book asks questions, explores possible answers, and expects you to consider its questions yourself to find your own answers. It doesn't lead you by the hand but it does provide an excellent framework for an approach to producing well planned and well thought out watercolors. The language and examples are simple, supported by narrative that cuts right to the chase with a minimum of fuss.

I think this is a must-have book for every serious watercolorist who wants to improve their work through careful consideration of what they are doing with each brushstroke. It has earned a place as a top ten favorite in my extensive library of watercolor instruction books and has already informed my painting process.

This book is a treasure!
By Kristen Scott
Tom Hoffmann has written a book that guides the interested watercolorist through a series of important topics or aspects of watercolor that form the core of mastering the medium. It's provocative, thoughtful and inspirational in turn. The book is filled with beautiful paintings by the author and other wonderful watercolor artists that illustrate each topic clearly. The author's narrative voice is informal enough that it's like sitting down with him over a cup of coffee, but rigorous in how he frames the questions artists must ask of themselves in order to get better. This is a book to read again and again as each time will reveal another layer in how to look at your art with clear eyes and determine where to go next. It is not so much a how-to book as a "what, when and why" guide for the intermediate and advanced painter. Do yourself a favor and take time to savor it! It's worth your time.

The Lords of Creation (Forbidden Bookshelf), by Frederick Lewis Allen

An acclaimed classic detailing the economic history of America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and exposing the capitalist giants who changed the world

Frederick Lewis Allen’s insightful financial history of the United States—from the late 1800s through the stock market collapse of 1929—remains a seminal work on what brought on America’s worst economic disaster: the Great Depression. In the decades following the Civil War, America entered an era of unprecedented corporate expansion, with ultimate financial power in the hands of a few wealthy industrialists who exploited the capitalist system for everything it was worth. The Rockefellers, Fords, Morgans, and Vanderbilts were the “lords of creation” who, along with like-minded magnates, controlled the economic destiny of the country, unrestrained by regulations or moral imperatives. Through a combination of foresight, ingenuity, ruthlessness, and greed, America’s giants of industry remolded the US economy in their own preferred image. In so doing, they established their absolute power and authority, ensuring that they—and they alone—would control the means of production, transportation, energy, and commerce—thereby setting the stage for the most devastating global financial collapse in history.

As Gretchen Morgenson thoughtfully states in her introduction, “It is not immediately clear why the frequency and severity of financial scandals is increasing in the United States. What is clear is that we need to understand the origins of these disasters, as well as the policies and people that bring them on. . . . While distant actions may seem unrelated to current events, rereading about the past almost always provides surprising insights into the present.”

The Lords of Creation, first published in the midst of the Great Depression, when the financial catastrophe was still painfully fresh, is a fascinating story of bankers, railroad tycoons, steel magnates, speculators, scoundrels, and robber barons. It is a tale of innovation and shocking exploitation—and a sobering reminder that history can indeed repeat itself.

Wonderful book!
By Melissa K. Bear
A detailed account of the financial expansion in the U.S. from the 1890's up to the Depression. In spite of the complexities of this subject Allen manages to make it understandable and interesting. There are so many similarities to what is happening in our country today that it should be a must read for everyone. I'll be saving this one for future reading and reference. Allen was such a gifted historical writer, if you have any interest in this period of time in American history then read all of Allen's books, you won't be disappointed.

Wall Street on Parade per Disappeared book Series
By M. L. Stanley
NYU Media Studies Professor, Mark Crispin Miller, has stumbled upon a potential landmine for Wall Street. In conjunction with Open Road Media, Miller has unearthed and is bringing back to life important vanished books under the imprint “Forbidden Bookshelf.” One of those books is The Lords of Creation: The History of America’s 1 Percent by Frederick Lewis Allen.

The only thing to change about the book is a new forward by Miller and an introduction by business writer, Gretchen Morgenson, of the New York Times. And, of course, that second half of the title has been added. In 1935 when the book was originally published, Wall Streeters were still called banksters. We can thank Occupy Wall Street for successfully marketing the 1 percent brand.

Read it and weep...
By mselectromagnetic
I started reading this book because I've heard that economic conditions are very similar right now to those that preceded the famous Wall St. crash of 1929. It's disgusting to note that many of the names that figured prominently in sending the nation into the chaos of the Great Depression are the EXACT same names that are setting us up to fall down again. This book was written a long time ago, so the style seems a bit stilted or stuffy (hence a 4 out of 5), and I don't have patience for long lists of people long dead who should have died in jail for what they did. As a scholarly work, it is above reproach...the research cites a variety of sources, and all conclusions are very well supported by documentation. It is exhausting to read, but it is also a very thorough indictment of the types of ethical and moral compromises invented by a group of business leaders who thought they were entitled to parasitize the American working public.
