About the Author
Nancy Condee is on the Slavic and Film Studies faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been Director of the Graduate Program for Cultural Studies for over a decade (1995-2006) and is a Senior Associate Member of St. Antony's College (Oxford University). She is co-founder and co-editor of the journal Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema, and serves on a number of editorial and advisory boards, including Kinokultura, Critical Quarterly, and Russian Studies in Literature. She is a member of the Russian Guild of Cinema Scholars and Critics (Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation) and is one of two U.S. scholars annually for over a decade invited to and supported by the Kinotavr Film Festival (Sochi), Russia's leading post-socialist film festival. She has served for six years as Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, the largest U.S. grant agency for social-science research in the former socialist bloc.

The Experience of Philosophy Short Review

I used this book for my introductory philosophy course. I believe it a great introductory book because it has texts that span the history of philosophy, ancient to contemporary, is organized thematically (which I find to be preferable to chronological), and not only does it have articles in "traditional" western philosophical perspective, but also includes Buddhist, Africana, and literary philosophical articles.

I recommend this book for any introductory philosophy course as well as to any experienced philosopher wanting to expand their philosophical knowledge base.

About the Author
Juhani Pallasmaa, Professor of Architecture at Helsinki University of Technology, has been engaged in architectural practice, graphic design and town planning since 1963. Over the past two decades, he has been appointed Associated Professor at the Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa (197274); Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture (197883); State Artist Professor (198388); and a visiting professor at Yale University (1993). He is an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the CICA International Committee of Architectural Critics. He has designed exhibitions on Finnish architecture, planning and the visual arts; contributed to articles and lectures on cultural philosophy; and edited several books and catalogues. He is author of The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses, (1996), a title in Academys Polemics series. Andrei Gozak worked in architectural practice before concentrating on writing and teaching. His book Alvar Aalto, published in Moscow in 1976, was a pioneering introduction for the Soviet architectural readership. It was followed in 1978 by a larger volume of texts and projects entitled Alvar Aalto: Arkhitektura i gumanizm (Alvar Aalto: Architecture and Humanism), as a result of which he was awarded the Medal of the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 he was chief designer of the professional journal Arkhitektura SSSR, as well as a regular contributor, and has also written widely for architecture journals in the West. In 1988 Academy Editions published his monograph on another Soviet pioneer of the 1920s, Ivan Leonidov: The Complete Works which he co-authored with Andrei Leonidov. Hehas been acquainted with the Melnikov family for many years.

Good for what it is

I would hesitate to consider this an Architecture text.
It can be used to complement traditional Architecture texts.
Being a work published by Phaedon, it is extremely well illustrated.

The nature of the field is that one can link a succession of works by application of theory and comparison of techniques of implementation and modification of rules, technologies and materials over time. One can look at the influence of specific Architects on those following, either in emulation, parody or contrast. None of this comes in this work.

The book has a strong suit in relating the vistas and sense of space by multiple photos and a 'site plan' for each of the works reviewed showing the relationship of the various points of perspective of the images taken. One can get a better sensation of the three dimensional totality of structures that is only otherwise to be had in a monograph of a single building or perhaps a detailed work of a particular architect. The text is very clear on expressing the vision of the writers.

Works are certainly often well chosen, though some few selected areas that focus on ancient monuments, a traditional African village and some funerary sites may seem out of place to a good many.

Conceptually some of the basic paradigms seem reasonable and others seem redundant. Each has 6 subject works that are expounding these in chronological sequence. The works all relate to the paradigm, but otherwise relate poorly to each other.

Needless to say, I could have appreciated a somewhat altered presentation, grouping similar types of works together (Libraries, Churches, Domestic buildings, Municipal Buildings, Commercial buildings, etc. and perhaps tying some of these by concept later. This might give relation to the various ways that Architectural themes could be applied for a purpose.

A fantastic and novel approach to description of architectural works. McCarter guides though sequential floor plan guides and photographs to deliver a vicarious experience of works from the ancient to the contemporary.

Not the basis for the new TV show of the same name but a fun read nonetheless

I knew this book wasn't the basis of the new television show by the same name before I started reading it but the synopsis sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a try.

I watched the first show of the new ABC television series last week starring Kiefer Sutherland and loved it so I went searching on Amazon to see if it was perhaps based on an existing book. No such luck but I did find this book.

The TV show is character based (how could it not be starring Sutherland) while this story is based more on the mechanics and "what ifs" of some disaster happening while most of the country's leadership is gathered in one place. And then it focuses on the hunt for the terrorists that did the dirty deed.

I enjoyed this book although at times it seemed implausible but then that's why I read fiction. If I want truly impossible, I watch the evening news or watch the presidential debates.

This was an enjoyable quick read with enough twists and turns to hold my interest and just enough character development to care about what happened to at least some of the characters.

A good read, liked the characters and the story flows. I have read better, but I have read many more that were not as good. I will add the author to my watch list!
